Perhaps the first thing one would notice upon making acquaintances with the Shinigami known as Neru is that his demeanor lacks very much anxiety. This portion of his personality can be accredited to his early childhood. Life had been so unforgiving for him as a boy that he was only left with two choices: Smile and shrug off the pain, or become completely consumed by it.

Neru's nature is indeed a polite one. He seeks to not disappoint anyone and will usually go out of his way to avoid any unnecessary conflict. To him, fighting is more of a means to an end, rather than the end itself. Not surprisingly, most whom come in contact with Neru are quick to deem him as anti-social. However, those that actually take the time to understand him realize that this is not true. In all actuality, being a team player is one of Neru's greatest strengths, for he holds an uncanny ability to keep everyone in a relaxed state even through turmoil.

Although one wouldn't suspect it upon glancing at the boy's slender frame, his favorite activity is stuffing his face. His food pallet is so unimaginably large that it is to the point that he will eat almost anything. However, he could use some guidance in proper eating etiquette, as he rips through his meals so fast that he barely takes the time to chew. Sports, like most troubled youths, was his outlet as a child on Earth. He wasn't a top echelon player by any means but the game served as a way to release built up tension.

Snip. There goes the umbilical cord. Only a moment later a weak cry could be heard by all who were in the vicinity. It was the sound of new life. The volume of the sound emitting from the newborn began to increase. Where was the warmth that he had grown so accustomed to over the past nine months? It seemed as though all he was left with at this point was the brisk midnight breeze that had carried itself through the open window of the sedan and wrapped itself around him.

"No.. I won't.." these words escaped the lips of a young woman. The child recognized the voice. It was the same voice that would sing him beautiful lullaby every so often. It reminded him of the warmness that he had felt prior to this moment of uncertainty. Oh how he longed to be back in that place.. That place of warmth and security.

The cries of the small child began to become muffled. Suddenly, his air passages had been blocked off by a cloth. What was happening? No oxygen was entering the child's body and the consequences of this became quickly apparent. The pace of his heartbeat slowly lessened until it had come to a complete stop. Neru Hanari's candle of life had been burnt out.

A hundred and sixteen had passed since Neru Hanari entered the Soul Society as only a newborn. Thankfully, a random Shinigami had saved his soul from being the meal of the fiends known as the Hollows by performing a Soul Burial.

As an orphan living in District 23 of Rukongai, Neru's situation was pretty much commonplace. However, due to him almost eating each resident that bothered to take him in out of house and home, Neru was never able to stick to one living space for longer than a few months. Their wasn't much food to go around since over 90% of the population never had to eat. He was often teased by his peers and negatively referred to as a "buta" or "pig", due to his unusual appetite. Tough luck.. if Neru didn't have that, then he'd have none at all.

Of course it was unbeknownst to Neru how or why he had arrived in the Rukongai in the first place. The only thing that he was sure of is that he had died. That in itself raises another question.. When exactly did he live?..

He had gotten used to the crime-filled streets of the Rukongai. His leg muscles were strengthened from what seemed like daily near-death escapes from criminals up to no good. It didn't help that he had nowhere to go even after losing the trail of his pursuers. His body was sprawled out in an alley, exhausted from the unwanted exercise that he had just completed. Suddenly, a shadow towered above him and shielded him from the rays of the sun. Had they found him already?

However, it was not the criminals of the Rukongai that had discovered the exhausted soul that day. It was a trio of men dressed in traditional Shinigami attire. Neru, of course, immediately recognized them as such. One of the Shinigami informed Neru that they had heard of his unusual appetite and that it could imply that his reiatsu could actually be used in combat. They requested that Neru enlist in the Academy and become a Shinigami himself. Neru barely hesitated, as any lifestyle would be an improvement over the one that he had presently.

[ Academy Daze. ]
The next six years seemed like a daze... and even longer than the prior one hundred plus of Neru's existence. Endless kendo sessions, grueling physical training, and, perhaps the Soul Society's form of cruel and unusual punishment, boring lectures on various subjects. There was barely anytime for any extra-curricular activities due to the military-style presence of the academy. If you weren't eating or sleeping, then you were preparing to be a Shinigami.

Neru always gave the utmost effort to not drawing attention to himself. Even during kendo sparring matches when the students were basically paired on a stage and asked to duel one another in front of the student body. Neru would defeat his opponent without making much of a spectacle of himself, take a bow, and take his seat amongst the other Shinigami in-training.

The six years of rigorous training had developed Neru from one who avoided physical confrontation at all costs, into a warrior capable of slaying Hollows and fulfilling his duty as a Shinigami. His combat skills had been honed and his body conditioned for battle. Neru received his Zanpakutō (which takes the unreleased form of dual Kodachi that share one sheath) and graduated from the Academy. Freshly graduated from the Shino Academy, not much is expected of the child who's life was taken at such a young age.. but then again, fate has a plan for us all.
