RYOICHI SORA
I. Basic Information
» Name: Ryoichi Sora
» Age: 22 (Apparent) | 45 (Real)
» Gender: Male
» Appearance Image:
» Appearance Written:
If anyone were to share their first impression of Ryoichi with you, then they would probably label him as "unremarkable". He went from being a smallish boy into a well-developed adult, with pale, smooth skin. a lithe, lean frame, and well-proportioned limbs. He moves quietly, never taking up much space, as if making himself smaller in the eyes of others. On the rare occasion he is speaking, he tends to avoid grand gestures, over the top movements, and displays of agility. Instead, he favors efficiency and calculated movements.
When it comes to his hair, he has very long, somewhat wavy, reddish brown hair that cascades well past his shoulders. The tips oddly, possess a more intense shade of that red hue than the rest of the hair. Ryoichi does not really care for fashionable haircuts: he only keeps his bangs shorter so that he has no trouble seeing around. He usually keeps the rest of it out of becoming a nuisance by tying it on a ponytail. Whenever he does not, it proves to be much wilder than its owner, refusing to stay down and giving him a much more unkempt look; still, it is much softer and pleasant to the touch than what it may originally seem.
When left to his own devices, without interacting with anyone else, Ryoichi's visage is eerily blank and empty, a clean slate for any interaction that may arise. His face is not angular by any means, although it's not round or pudgy either. His eyes wander around slowly, always unassuming, without passing judgement. Small, and reddish brown in color, they are but a means to discern his surroundings.
Ryoichi has a scar on his head, the result of the acidic touch of the Hollow that almost managed to prey on his soul back when he died so many years before. Arguably his most distinctive feature, and somehow colder to the touch than the rest of his skin, it has a dark-brown coloration and somewhat resembles a flame-like pattern.
Ryoichi owns little clothing of his own, and cares not about fashion. Clothes are simply something made to stay warm and cover what must not be seen, and thus he treats them as such.
II. Personality
» Personality:
Ryoichi is not someone that draws attention to himself. On the contrary, he is more likely to go by unnoticed, glossed over by flashier, more charismatic people. This is due to a combination of factors, such as closed body language, a low voice tone when speaking, and rarely showing any emotion other than stillness.
Yes, Ryoichi Sora is a pretty private person. He rarely talks about what bothers him, and even more rarely allows someone to truly delve into the innermost parts of his mind. Most of the time, this is because finding the proper words to express himself proves to be quite the daunting task: communication does not come naturally to him. This has made him into a man that believes that one should watch for what others do, not what they say. He will judge you by the actions you take, and in turn, prefers to make statements by acting proactively.
However, this approach to socialization makes it more difficult for him to keep up with the more nuanced aspects of conversation, such as double-entendres, innuendos, and at times, sarcasm. This has turned him into a shy man, as he simply cannot keep up and make friends as easily as others through light-hearted banter and more casual interactions. Plus, on the rare occasion that he actually speaks his mind, he does so bluntly, without any filters. This in turn can cause him to make a terrible first impression or get in trouble, yet he still will not back down.
Sucking at normal conversation means that his non-verbal communication skill vastly improved to compensate, though. He will observe people to estabilish a baseline of how they tend to behave, so that he may catch a glimpse of things such as a verbal tic of yours that only shows up while nervous. He also keeps an eye on his surroundings as well.
Now, while he may fall short on communication, this does not make him any less of a good friend. Since his more reserved personality means he rarely connects with someone, he treasures his friendships and will go to great lengths for those he considers dear to him. In fact, he will gladly share their happiness without feeling any envy that things may be going far better for them than from him, and when depressed, he will offer a shoulder to cry on.
This combination makes for some hilarious tendencies, such as him loving to play matchmaker for his closer friends without conveying his intentions: he enjoys actively shipping people together. Wanting them to be happy, he may put them in rather uncomfortable situations while thinking that he's doing them a favor and that love will surely bloom between them. He just wants them to be happy, could you blame him? (Of course, being on the receiving end makes him a nervous wreck).
On the topic of friendship, he feels himself drawn towards more active people, feeling that their own energy cancels his stillness: the type of people that are like a hurricane and are always doing something interesting. Even though it may seem weird, getting dragged into their antics is not something he hates; on the contrary, it brings him the surprise and excitement that he just cannot seem to find otherwise, so you don't need to tell him to follow if he knows you and you want to do something interesting.
Although he values his friends, Ryo does enjoy spending time alone too. Those moments of solitude grant him peace of mind and allows him to put his thoughts in order. He will prefer to be left to his own devices whenever he needs to make a hard decision. Those intruding in his solitude, if unwelcome, will be treated harshly: remember that, despite everything, he is still quite reserved.
III. History
» History:
Ryoichi's tale begins in the Human world as the firstborn of a newly wed couple, although nothing remarkable happened during that period. After all, he had only just turned five years old before an accident during a ride took his life: being so little, his body was far weaker than that of his parents, and thus he died before being able to receive the medical care that may have saved his life. At his age, Ryoichi did not understand what in the world was going on, only that there was some sort of chain attached to his body... and that a monster-like creature approached after an hour or so had passed: a Hollow.
As unfortunate as it was, a Shinigami had not gotten to him first. The beast celebrated its luck, since feasting on such a young soul was rare indeed, and proceeded to instill as much fear into the boy as possible to make his meal even more delicious. For some reason, howver, Ryoichi showed no signs of being scared. Maybe it was the shock, maybe it was his mind coping with the situation, but the boy stared blankly at the creature, even when it grasped his head during one his intimidation attempts.
The kid's unsettling stillness managed to distract the Hollow long enough for a Shinigami to enter the scene and save the day, killing the beast and performing Konso to send little Ryo to Soul Society without delving on it too much. This is how a young (and lost) Ryoichi Sora ended up in Soul Society, being assigned to the 63rd district of North Rukongai.
Now, nobody in their right minds would willingly adopt a child out of nowhere in a high-numbered district: caring for one (and one's family) was arduous enough without adding a child to the mix. Yet, against all odds, someone took pity on the small kid, knowing he would inevitably die if left there. Thus, Ryoichi got adopted by a couple that already had a daughter, a soul that looked around the same age as he did, but who doubled the boy in age. His mother ran a small tavern, kept mostly intact because of it being the local watering hole for many criminals who happened to like the place, thus offering some degree of protection to it. His father worked as a carpenter.
Despite the violence ever-present in high-numbered districts, Ryo's family made a point to never harm anyone and live humbly and honestly. Thus, they did their best to instill pacifist values on them. Ryoichi and his adoptive sister Honoka grew up learning to respect all life and believing violence to never be the answer, no matter how harsh life might get. Despite being raised the same, the two of them however had quite different personalities.
Honoka was like the wind: always active, full of energy, doing something. Her brother seemed almost lethargic in comparison. She was kept a smile on her face and looked towards the future as if she could see something bright, something the rest of them in their district just could not. Ryoichi looked up to her, and in time, those around her began doing so as well. Her mere presence just inspired one to try and do better: she gave them hope, just by having hope herself. In turn, she grew quite attached to Ryo, always ensuring that he was not lacking anything at all.
However, Honoka had a secret that she kept from everyone else, everyone but her brother. She, against her family's teachings, desired to become a Shinigami. If she gained power, then she would be able to ensure that her family could move from that district and into a better life, and she was willing to toss aside her principles and teachings to do so. Thus, she had been training for years in secret, all while Ryoichi simply watched her pursue her goal with great interest, supporting her as well as he could.
Needless to say, she managed to become strong enough to at least try her luck. As fate would have it, she managed to enter. Now, everything she needed to do was become a full-fledged Shinigami and her family would finally be able to live a better life. Her parting was a sad moment for Ryo, who was going to miss her a lot, but he still supported her with everything he had... much unlike her parents, who nearly disowned her for choosing a life that involved bloodshed at every corner. They wondered how in the world their own flesh and blood had turned out like that, failing to realize that everything she did was for their sake.
A few more years passed.
Honoka eventually graduated, but was slapped in the face by reality. Just being a low-ranked goon did not guarantee you anything. If she wanted to bring her family to the Seireitei, she was going to need to rack up merit. Thus, not only was she constantly patrolling her designated area to perform Konso on new Pluses, but was also on the prowl for any Hollow kill that would bring her just a little more prestige... until, eventually, she bit more than she could chew, and died in the field.
It did not take long for someone to go knock on Ryoichi's door and inform him and his family that Honoka was dead. The news brought both parents to their knees, who cried bitterly in front of the Shinigami that had kindly gone out of his way to inform them. Ryoichi silently shed tears, too, while his eyes were fixed on the black-clothed man. More accurately, beyond the black-clothed man, as if staring towards nothingness.
He had supported her. He had always cheered for her, wishing that she would achieve her dream. Now, she was gone. What did that mean? Was it really necessary, to sacrifice for them? Why hadn't he followedh her to continue offering his support? Ryoichi had simply waited for her to "save" them and go back home together. He had done nothing, he had chosen to do nothing, and now, his closest relative was dead. Did not that speak volumes of the type of man he was?
Unable to bear with his guilt, Ryoichi left home with a single purpose in mind. He had never had any ambitions, and even then he would not fight for himself, but to fulfill his sister's dream on her place. It was the very least he could do not only for her and for his family... but to clear his own conscience as well. He needed to figure out what he was going to do, and how he was going to do it. For starters, pursuing the same path as Honoka made the most sense. However, what would he do when he got there?
