The Most Extravagant Ideas [Liana/Julian]

Julian

Julian, admittedly, had not meant for his meeting with the Captain to be so delayed. But he had been called upon by the Captain Commander for another meeting, and then, of course, there had been his wedding. It was a brief enough affair, but that in turn had led to finding a home, settling in... A whole mess, but one he would never even dream of trading for the world. Now, however, he found himself once more in a professional situation, knocking at the door to Captain Unohana's office.

"May I enter, Captain?"

He did hope that she would understand his time spent correcting his own mental state. While Julian had been nothing short of exhausted in the time before his brief leave, he had to admit that he was refreshed beyond any time he had been in his life. He would go so far as to say that he was...well, happy.

It was nice.

LIANA UNOHANA

"Please, come in."

Liana was disappointed in Julian's failure to appear on schedule, but news of his abrupt meeting with the Captain Commander--and more importantly his own wedding, to Liana meant it was excusable. That said, Liana had a vested interest in the well-being of her subordinates, but she was also a strict woman.

"You know, Vendemiaire-san, I do think it's the responsibility of the person who must cancel to notify the other party of their inability to attend when a meeting has been prior arranged."

Her words cut through the room, and the entire vicinity dropped in temperature to a degree that had Liana's zanpakuto mistaken for being ice-based before. Her posture and expression didn't seem much out of the ordinary, her usual calm and composed self on display, but the coldness of the room suggested otherwise.

"My return to the division was recent, but it unfortunately seems like in my absence, people have grown less accountable. In light of this situation, I have something for you, Vendemiaire-san."

Liana reached under her desk and brought out a black box, around a foot in all dimensions.

"Before I have you open it, I'd like to make note of what we should do for future reference in the event that something similar happens, and how we should go about making certain that it is done."

"Yes, ma'am, I apologize for my failure to report at our scheduled time. I allowed personal matters to distract me. It will not occur again."

Julian offered his Captain a deep bow, his apology exceptionally genuine for more than a few reasons. The first was simply that he had since settled into the role of a genuinely diligent member of the Gotei United. It was poor form for him to ignore a scheduled meeting like this, but that perhaps leaned more toward the second reason. He had, after all, spent many years of his life carefully handling the revolution. He was entirely aware of how severely irritating it was to work around a failure to report.

"I will send a Hell Butterfly in all future instances wherein I am genuinely unable to attend any scheduled appointments, Captain. I will naturally work to remain mindful of my duties and keep personal matters from interfering further in them."

Honestly, it was extremely unlike him for that to happen. Though, thinking about it, Julian supposed the marriage in itself had been "extremely unlike him." He did not mind that.

"Good. I'm putting my trust in you that your word is true, and I am thankful that you understand what should be done from hereon out."

The temperature returned to the norm, and Liana's face went from composure to glee as an excited smile drew upon her face.

"Now, please open your wedding gift. Hurry!"

The woman pushed the box forward on her desk, and gestured expediency with her hands. Inside was a pair of chain necklaces of a practical metal. It was sturdy, good to wear even in combat, and long enough to be both kept out of the way without dangling out or being a vulnerability to take advantage of in a fight. At the ends were tear shaped sky-blue crystals with a snowflake inside.

"The snowflake is suspended. It's a genuine snowflake that would normally just melt immediately. I talked with some acquaintances from Lux Orior, and they gave me these crystals where with their technology, they were able to freeze the snowflake permanently. Furthermore, the mood of the wearer is reflected in the other necklace, so you can always know how your partner is feeling. In case they are in danger, you will also know that.

So, do you like it?"

Liana wore a smile uncharacteristic of herself, and her cheeks were slightly puffed as she held her breath.

"Thank you, ma'am."

Julian was actually caught a little bit off guard by the change in his Captain's demeanor, and even moreso at being given a wedding gift by her. Truth be told, it actually caught him even more off guard than the Commander's, if only because of what a shift Liana had taken, and because of his own expectations of how she would approach this meeting. Nevertheless, he smiled after a moment of examining them, and as she explained the gift he took one from the box to more properly look it over.

"It is wonderful, ma'am. Thank you, truly, I can scarcely convey how touched I am. Minerva will love it as well, I am sure."

Placing the one he had taken out around his own neck, Julian closed the box once more to prevent the other one from being damaged. He doubted they would be, especially if his Captain had given it to him, but it was best to be careful and respectful toward a gift.

"Fantastic, I'm glad you liked it. You look much better now as well, thankfully."

Her smile reflected the genuineness in her words, and the smile held up, but the tone of her next words weren't quite as lighthearted.

"I presume your new marriage wouldn't be of major interference with your duties, however I am concerned about whether it would inhibit you from aspiring for a, how might I say, better Soul Society? If it isn't too much trouble, I'd like to start talking about the reason this private meeting was arranged. You did say that the changes the Captain Commander brought forth was 'not enough', right?"

"I certainly feel much better. Thank you again, Captain."

Julian, of course, had not forgotten the original intention of this meeting, nor had his stance on the matter changed. He continued to believe that the Captain Commander's changes would not be enough, that the people of the Rukongai would deserve more. He did not hide that belief, but he also did not believe it necessary.

"Ah, no, Captain, my marriage will not interfere in those aims. My wife has been my longest collaborator in my work toward a brighter future, and her dream is much the same as my own. I have promised to her that I will see such a thing accomplished. I believe there will still be far more work to be done, far more misplaced discontent among the citizenry and, of course, far more antiquated policy and Gotei influence over the Rukongai which is quite likely unwarranted."

She was glad. Genuinely. It wasn't uncommon for a person to lose sight of their goals and ambitions as a result of their matrimony, or frankly any other particularly important relationship. Liana saw it happen before, and she never faulted the person for it--perhaps she'd be the same, if she ever found a partner. But, the goal they had in mind wasn't something personal. It wasn't just for them, but for everyone--the goal needed to be met whether or not people still strove for it.

Liana leaned back in her chair a bit and crossed her legs under the table, her smile held, but changed to a more natural one, of relaxation rather than elation.

"I'm most glad to hear that. I believe we've been working towards the same goal entirely independently, however, and I don't think that is in our best interest. Being united on this front is. I think having your wife be of the same mind would've taught you that persevering together is the easiest path forward, no? So, I'd like to ask, if you are open to it, what steps your side has taken, and what steps you aim to take moving onward. What is the point of 'success' that marks the change we seek. I'm more than happy to share my own as well, if you'd like to know."

What he had done in the name of this goal... That, he supposed, was an inevitable question. Julian had anticipated as much, though idly, he wondered how much information the Captain Commander had shared with the Captains. He knew that his role as Special Executioner had been shared with them, but any other knowledge, he did not know. Was his Captain testing him? It was irrelevant, regardless. Honesty was the only correct approach either way.

"I founded and directed the Greater Future Coalition for roughly two decades. During this time I have established extensive information networks throughout the Rukongai, as well as disseminated a variety of information and political belief that has lessened faith in the Gotei as an institution."

He paused briefly, considering how best to word the next part.

"I, additionally, oversaw the execution of numerous shinigami in order to leverage information, and developed my Executioner's Blade as a method of providing the people a method of enacting justice. In light of the recent reforms the Gotei has enacted, the Coalition has been abolished, as its members reached a schism regarding the nature of the reforms. At this time, while the networks that my wife and I established are still present, and the Executioner's Blade still functions, the only other mark of the Coalition's effort is the continued hope for a republic among many of the citizens in outer districts."

Two decades. An incredible perseverance--maybe not to many people of Soul Society considering their longevity. But the two people here were young. Just under half his life dedicated to this goal. Liana was a driven woman, but many things brought her to be driven, and consistent success was no doubt a powerful motivator. As far as she understood, about the goal of the coalition--and at most in speculation, Julian's goals--it should've undoubtedly been quite the life to give someone such a drive. But, just as the current state affairs wasn't enough, neither was speculation.

"Are the people of the coalition still seeking a republic? I have no doubts that a good number of people would be dissuaded in greater fulfillment when thrown a bone, and numbers is an important factor in dreams such as this."

She didn't mean to sound skeptical, to be doubting the fires of a people's souls, but Liana was a pragmatic woman.

"And your wife is involved, as well? Is that fine? A single wrong step, and even if the coalition exclusively operated peacefully, someone would take your mantle and fulfill your job against you. A single whisper of mine spells doom, unless you could have some means to stop a captain in their tracks."
