Soul Food [Law, Murasaki]

THE BLADE MAIDEN
KAGAYAKU NO MURASAKI
From: mkaga@7div.gti
To: law@7div.gti
Subject: Meeting
Message: Meet me in San Francisco. August 10th, 3pm, southern end of the Golden Gate bridge.
That was the last message that Murasaki had sent to Law, and she now sat atop a small mat she had laid out, watching the waters of the San Francisco Bay idly. She took a short sip of her tea, but it was obvious even at a glance that this whole setup was simply a formality. It was a far cry from the usual extravagance she might have pursued for a tea setup, lacking in any of the usual snacks and sweets, to say nothing of her tent being nowhere nearby.
Truth be told, it hadn't even occurred to the captain that Law would likely already be able to tell just how different she was. That wasn't helped by the fact that she just didn't care. The only thing on her mind was work, and that was all this meeting was. She had a lot to talk to Law about when it came to the upcoming continuation of the American offensive, and while they had obviously made progress, it wouldn't do to just rest on their laurels and call this a win. There was still very much to be done.
Ah, but one might wonder how Law would know so quickly that Murasaki was a far cry from the girl she used to be. That was, in fact, rather simple. Her last text to him had been... Quite different from the norm. In fact, one only needed to look a single text backward:

SURGEON OF DEATH
It had been a bit of time since their last meeting, but Law still couldn't imagine Murasaki's demeanor having shifted so drastically. She had been incredibly cheerful every time he'd met her previously, but this last text had marked a dramatic change of tone. To be honest, it made him angry. He couldn't quite explain the anger, but he certainly felt it. Perhaps he was just overreacting though. After all, he hadn't even seen her yet. Something in the back of his mind told him that he'd be even less pleased when he did though, which troubled him.
Since they'd last met, Law had taken on a bit of a task for Vastime, having taken out an SF base, and sailing towards America from the Bahama's. He couldn't exactly justify taking his entire crew, in addition to a ship that belonged to Vastime to the exact opposite side of the country, so he left them on standby for a bit.
It didn't take Law very long to reach California, Plum sake in tow. He'd been carrying it around in his luggage since he left Japan, actually. He'd like to call it the power of foresight, but in reality it was just a preparation for an occurrence he'd hoped for. Law had a feeling this wouldn't be the meeting he'd hoped for, however. On the way, he created a small bow and tied a card to it, something he thought would certainly make the Murasaki he knew smile.
As he slowly walked across the bridge, Law could see his captain seated in a quite different setup that what he was used to. Another nagging feeling would not leave him as he traversed the remainder of the distance, all the way up until he stood before her. He had planned to send the bottle of sake directly to her using his room, but when he saw her from afar he'd changed his mind, wanting to hand it to her directly. There was none of the energy that one would expect from the usually cheery green haired woman. Law sat across from her and offered the bottle, its small card, and the words inscribed upon it clearly visible.
It's gonna be totes daijobu
"Yo, you wanted to talk to me cap?"

THE BLADE MAIDEN
KAGAYAKU NO MURASAKI
Upon Law's arrival, Murasaki's only response was to set down her tea and simply stare at the bottle he had brought for her. In truth, she had long since forgotten about the request she had made to him, and even seeing the gift now didn't jog her memory. Nevertheless, she took it after realizing it was for her, and read the card for perhaps a moment longer than one might imagine it would take. The bottle may not have reminded her, but the note surely had.
“...I appreciate that you took the time to bring this. Thank you.”
Any of the usual joy that might have rung through Murasaki's voice was entirely absent as she spoke. Her words seemed to convey nothing more than the most literal meaning they might have had, as if any emotion had been actively carved away. That wasn't far from the case, of course, but considering that this girl was perhaps better known than any other in the Gotei for her cheer, the complete absence of it was more than a touch striking. Setting the bottle down after examining it for a moment or two longer, the captain returned her attention to Law, her gaze disconcertingly cold and analytical.
“Though there's been a ceasefire for a while, the war will probably be starting again soon. We've already gotten reports of an attack in Vastime, though we don't have the full details yet. Whether it was Shadow Fall or someone else, they've been biding their time long enough that I suspect they'll be ready for something major. I suspect either a counteroffensive for America, or an assault in Europe against Vastime. Either way, we need to be ready here. You're familiar with this country, and I know you've been operating in the area. I want a rundown of what you know.”
Naturally, there were probably more personal matters that Murasaki should have been talking about, but it had been months now and she certainly hadn't talked about them yet. She wouldn't be starting any time soon, either, not when she still had so much work to be doing.

SURGEON OF DEATH
Law's jaw visibly clenched as he received the sort of response he'd been expecting, but also dreading. Murasaki's cheerfulness had been what had drawn him to her in the first place, and the fact that none of that displayed itself caused him to grit his teeth as he listened to her speak. He would never admit it, but there was a certain charm to her that had enticed him from the very start. It was something he'd wanted to protect, regardless of the cost. Now that none of that was presenting itself, a rage was boiling inside of him, the likes of which he hadn't experienced since the death of his family. For some reason, since the first time they'd spoken, he'd been reminded that there was more he could be experiencing. That precious things should be cherished, not turned to ash. It was a reawakening of emotions he didn't think he'd possessed any longer. Now it was meaningless. As he began to speak, his brow furrowed. His eyes narrowed, and his general demeanor became that of someone who was ready for a fight. He would hold off for now, but in the end, it was inevitable that his anger would be demonstrated in full force.
"ShadowFall will crumble under our assault. Their power is for naught, their resources are cut off, and their strategy is juvenile. You need me to tell you none of these things, for they are obvious. They are spread thin, and will experience every disadvantage that comes with that status. Their last line of defense, the barrier that surrounds the remainder of their territory, is child's play for me to breach. Our attack will be swift and without flaw, and again, they will crumble. "
Law recited this almost as if he were reading a prepared speech. The difference in their conversation this time as compared to last was reminiscent of the difference between night and day. Still, his eyes were narrowed. The anger continued to build. Inside of his head, the hollow began to speak.
"I like her better broken. Just think of how cheerful she used to be, and look at her now. A shell of her former self. She'll never recover."
"I enjoy breaking things as well. Take you for example. I'll pull you out from there, you know I can, don't you. I'll rip you apart, until there's nothing left. I'll pluck your eyes out and feed them to you as the blood flows from your empty sockets. I'll rip your tongue out with my bear hands, after I reduce it to cinders. I'll burn the heart out of you while you wallow in the agony that will become your existence. You think you know what broken is? You think you know what pain is? You may be my hollow, but you have no idea what I'm capable of. You may think you know of every heinous act that could be performed, but I'll show you what it really means to be evil. You think you're the monster here? You don't know the meaning of the word. Keep quiet and don't provoke me, or I'll make you understand what it means to be broken, you disgusting filth"
"There are the basics. If you need specifics, simply ask."
