I. Character History

» History

"You've come at an awkward time, Inquisitor. I hadn't expected that Lady Claire would be interested in the events that occurred at the fort in China.", the sound of clanging fine china being placed on to the table brought the scene to vibrant life. The setting a small cabin in Romania, near the capitol, and meager in the way of homely feel, this cottage is home to an elderly Sueki historian. On this day that Historian had become the topic of an inquiry by the Inquisitor sent to gather information on events that had occurred in a House of Flesh fortress that had long been abandoned. "Lady Claire is interested in anything that could grant insight into the butchering of several Sueki excavators and soldiers...and you, the only survivor.", the Inquisitor said as the elderly man poured him tea while placing down a few condiments: sugar, cream, and blood. The Inquisitor would pour a bit of blood in his tea with sugar, giving it a testing sip as he placed legs one over the other, waiting patiently for the elder to talk. He wouldn't have to wait long.

"I tried to warn them, Inquisitor. They would heed no advice from an elder such as I who is close to the end of his life cycle. I tried to tell them not to mettle in the affairs of our history, to not tread in that tomb lightly without some form of respect, and yet they still entered. Defying the will of the forefathers that came before them and released a beast of calamity upon us all.", the elder said finally said as he continued to walk around the quaint kitchen in the cottage, but finally he stopped to turn upon the Inquisitor. "I will tell you what I know, but first to understand what we are all dealing with...a lesson in history is appropriate. In these times our history seems less important than our future to current generations, a sad state of affairs, but not something that surprises me...still on to the history lesson.", the elder said with his back turned to the young Sueki Inquisitor, who continued to enjoy his tea, and in doing so would allow the elder to ramble on for a bit.

"It is still unknown how several of the Houses came to be, but what is certain is that legend says it was due to adaption...the need to hunt humanity and continue exist allowed for evolution to change our species in spectacular ways. To know of what has been unleashed is to understand just how the House of Flesh was founded and its first steps out into the pale moonlight. At the time of the House of Flesh's foundation, they were ostracized for being too different from those that feasted on other forms of life-force, at the time the House of Blood had yet to exist, but that is not the point of this story. No, the House of Flesh was very much founded on its own, and stood on its own underneath the guidance of the First of Flesh.", the elder said as he brought his own cup to the table, sitting it down, and pouring himself a cup, filling it with flakes of flesh, and pouring blood into it. Clearly the historian was of the House he spoke of, the Inquisitor noted the man's shaking hands, but said nothing. "The First of Flesh? As in the very first of their kind?", the Inquisitor queried, taking another long sip from the cup of tea.

"The descendants of the first of their kind was granted that title upon being elected the head of house. It is a long since discarded title, not necessary in today's era. The First of Flesh was the leader, always guiding the fate of his or her people, and for many centuries that sort of leadership worked in favor of the House, until the prejudice of what they were was wiped away and they were allowed to join the ranks of the other Sueki people underneath the Sanguine Court. From that moment forward, the First of Flesh became little else than ambassador, and that was fine. The days of needing a First of Flesh to decide all the fates of his people had faded away upon joining the court, and the First of Flesh at the time was fine with that. He relished the opportunity to hand over the reigns of leadership to someone more fitting to rule than he, that was at least what he had originally thought.", the Elder said and then took a sip of his own tea cordially before putting the cup back down to continue. "The First at that time was more a Warrior than a leader, he relished the open fields of combat, and the slaughter of his foes...not the bureaucracy that came with titles."

"His name was Takuya Lao, the Eater of Armies.", the elder said in a hushed whisper as the shutters on the side of the cottage shook and violently opened. A strong breeze came from the window, causing the candle that illuminated the room to flicker, and waver, but it remained strong as the breeze died down. The Inquisitor had heard there was a storm coming in and he wondered if perhaps he would be able to get a late night snack when all of this was said and done. He found history boring, but was more than willing to humor the old coot as it would lead him closer to his prize, the information that he sought on what had happened in the abandoned fort. "He was the youngest child of the First of Flesh that came before him and he was...an anomaly. Normal Sueki of our species hunger for flesh, it is part of what makes them what they are...but Takuya? He was a glutton. He ate and ate, his appetite never quenched, and as such he was feared by his people. Treated like an outsider by his own family, his own kin, and his own people. Four times his people would try to kill him and four times...a massacre.", the elder said as he shakily put the cup of tea to his lips to sip once more.

"The fourth and final time, Takuya slaughtered his whole family and the army that they had summoned to purge him from this world. Several thousands of willing servants and trained soldiers clashed with Takuya for three whole days and on the third day as the moon reached its zenith, the deed was done. Takuya was First of Flesh and the family of Lao had been slaughtered along with their followers and on that night...Takuya feasted on their remains.", the elder said placing the cup down calmly as he got up from his seat again to grab what looked like jerky, more than likely human jerky, and sat back down in front of the Inquisitor. "So he slaughtered his family and he ate of his own...a cannibal like that had no right to be the head of any house, let alone allowed to live in the world.", the Inquisitor spoke up with authority in this voice as he leaned back in his chair, shaking his head in disgust. "I assumed you would view him as such, but to understand Takuya you must go deeper than face value, deeper than what the history presents. The Lao family was evil to its core, they exploited the House of Flesh to their fullest to gain power, and trampled on traditions, those that served the Lao were nothing more than monsters. Takuya, as vile as he may have been alive, was the one who believed in the Sanguine Court, and believed in bringing his people to the future. He was...a leader just as much as he was a warrior. Sadly he never realized that during his first life.", the elder said grimly.

"You see, Takuya had always been treated poorly due to a genetic mutation...his constant hunger and abnormal strength made him a threat to the Lao family. Yet, they exploited his mutations to their fullest, and used him as their executioner...he would slaughter in their name and enforced their will. All the while they would decline joining the Court, acting as tyrants to their people, and using their own son as a tool for war. It is not hard to see why Takuya became what he did...he trained under the finest instructors, he was manipulated by a family that truly didn't love him, and he was never once treated as an equal. He became nothing more than a sword and when the time came for him to be tossed aside, he refused to be thrown into the void of nothingness, and fought his way out of assassination attempt after assassination attempt. Until finally after it was over? He was First of Flesh with no qualifications to be so. He had never been educated in the way of leading, so when the Sanguine Court knocked on his doorstep, he handed the reigns of leading over to the court, and begged them to help his people.", the elder said as he reached into the bag of human jerky and partook in a little bit of nourishment. The Inquisitor thought little of it and allowed the man time to enjoy his meal before he would continue. Still watching the elder partake of a snack did make him hunger as well, not for flesh, but for something more bloody.

"When he handed over the reigns to the court, the people he wanted to bring to the future turned against him, and in doing so grew to hate Takuya. They targeted him wherever he went until finally Takuya decided to put himself into exile, not wanting to harm innocent people, but also not wanting to truly fight. For centuries he had been a murderer, an executioner, but now Takuya merely wanted a quiet life far from the bustle, and madness of war. He went quietly into the Pamir Mountains and disappeared from history for a while.", the Elder said as he finished off the last of the jerky, the Inquisitor noted the voracious appetite of the elder, but did not question it. Perhaps he had not ate in days? It was quite possible and if it that had been the case for himself then surely he would be doing the same thing, voraciously consuming quantities of blood in haste. The elder nodded his head, getting up from the table once again to throw away the empty bag of jerky. "It would have been a fine and fitting ending to a story for Takuya, but things did not end there because his people could not forget the horrors of the Lao nor of his days as their weapon. Cursed with both longevity of mind and body, they hunted for him in the mountains.", the Elder said as he turned his head to look at the Inquisitor with a frown on his face.

"Why would they hunt him? He had free'd them from the Lao and had given them what they had wanted....freedom.", the Inquisitor said with real interest in the story now. The story of Takuya was indeed interesting to him now, even if half of it was legend he was sure, a single Sueki slaughtering an army was almost unheard of outside of the strongest of their species, and he doubted Takuya's strength. "He was Lao by birth, his actions during their reign, even if under the influence of his family, were evil to the core, and the House of Flesh was not willing to forget and neither was the Sanguine Court. Though Takuya had handed over the reigns of the House to the Court, they were not satisfied, and decided to earn the favor of their new allies they would assist in taking down the monster that Takuya was. Legend has it that Takuya had taken to the life of a goat herder, eating the flesh of wild animals as opposed to the flesh of humanoids, and had fully embraced that life. The Court didn't care. Two of their lords and an army from the House of Flesh arrived at his doorstep one day...finding Takuya had settled into a new life, a new routine, and a new purpose.", the Elder said as he rejoined the young Inquisitor at the table and placed down something that he had been holding on to. It was a sword of some kind that gave off an eerie glow.

"They could not kill Takuya naturally, his genetic mutations allowed for him to regenerate by attaching limbs of his opponents to his own, and as such they feared he could never be destroyed. So his own house devised a way to counter those effect, this sword, and a chest. The sword could cancel his regeneration, it was made by coating it with several toxins that effected the regenerative properties of Sueki, and it had been tested thoroughly to see if it would work. The chest, however was designed to seal a Flesh Sueki's ability to restore itself from nothing as long as its brain remained intact, and though they feared they could never destroy Takuya, a justifiable fear, they decided to seal him away...to insure future generations would never be under a Lao's foot again.", the Elder said as he moved the blade closer to the Inquisitor so that he could take a closer look at it. The Inquisitor did observe the blade for a bit, noting it had rusted a bit, and the blade smelled eerily of blood. "So the Sanguine Court and the House of Flesh teamed up against Takuya because of prejudice and the want to appease the unwashed masses.", the Inquisitor stated as the Elder nodded his head.

"Yes, the battle was over quick as Takuya wasn't as sharp as he used to be. Feasting on animals had not given him the strength of old and he had stopped training in order to focus on his new life. They decapitated him and threw his head in the box, all the while he cursed them, and said that no matter what he would be back to lay waste to those that would not let him live in peace. They thought nothing of it and marched his head off to a well defended fort, where they intended to entomb Takuya's head, and insure that he would never be a threat to the Sueki ever again. Well that last part was said to be part of the myth, but to see him with your own eyes...to know that this legend is all real because he exists...I can only say without a doubt it is to know true fear.", the Elder said with a great deal of effort. It was very clear the ordeal had an effect on the man, but the Inquisitor was unsure of how any of this had to do with the loss of five Sueki and a group of servants. "So how did this all happen? How did this Takuya resurrect if he was sealed away?", the Inquisitor asked as the elder laughed and then let out a sigh. "I pleaded with them to not mess with things that were beyond them...I begged them to not open the door to his tomb...and yet they did. Curiosity and lack of respect are two things that should never mix, Inquisitor. Yet...they did not care. They brought the chest out of his tomb.", the Elder said remembering everything in detail as if it had happened only moments ago.

"I told them not to open it, at least they obeyed that request, but I did not know...gods I didn't know that the chest had a flaw. I'm a historian, I'm suppose to know these things, and yet I did not know. Still I was wary of the chest, Inquisitor, and even after removing it from his tomb demanded that they would put it back. Such things don't belong in our world...this era does not need a Takuya Lao, one who seeks vengeance against his own people for what they have done to him. They don't need that. I thought they had listened...I wish they had just listened to me for one damn second!", the Elder said as he got up from the table once more to collect the kettle on the stove to pour more tea out. He was slow moving and it was very visible that he was upset, the Inquisitor wold have to be careful on how he proceeded. He needed information and did not need to spend his night consoling an old man back to sanity. "What happened, Elder?", the Inquisitor asked as silence fell over the cabin save for a breeze coming from outside on this summer evening in Romania that rattled the shutters of a window near the kitchen. The Elder said nothing as he placed the kettle down for the Inquisitor and himself, making sure to place more tea bags at the table as he did so.

"They brought the chest with them...inside was the head of the First of Flesh...the fools. A mere drop of blood as a soldier sliced his hand across the frame of the chest was all it took, seeping into the container...reaching the decaying, decrepit skin of the head within...it awoke the First from his slumber.", the older Sueki shuddered for a second as he recalled something that he would rather not. "The mountain of bodies that was left behind that day was a clear message to her majesty. That though she was Queen, that though her men had found something of great importance...she had messed with forces even above her. Things that predated her...things that should have remained buried.", the elderly Sueki sat down in his chair as the inquisitor felt an air of uneasiness pass through the candle lit room in Romania. "And what happened to the First? Where did he go and why did he leave you alive?", the Inquisitor found himself asking as he poured himself another cup of tea, followed by pouring a bit of blood inside much like a man pouring cream into his coffee. The elderly Sueki tensed up, his eyes scanned the room as if looking for an unseen enemy that was clearly not there.

"He went West...slaughtering those that got in his way. I remember clearly being able to hear the screams from where he left me and the words he spoke to me before he left me to my fate.", The Inquisitor tilted his head to the side as the elderly man began to shake uncontrollably. Normally a Sueki was used to savagery, they were used to doing the things they needed to survive, to be shaken in such a manner by meeting the First of Flesh? That meant that the being was truly monstrous. All legends had pointed toward the First of Flesh being slaughtered by the other houses to protect the budding Sueki people from his hunger, the fact that he walked among them again was nothing short of horrible, but it surely was nothing that their Queen could not deal with. She was their messiah after all. "He said....", the old man stopped, his shaking ceasing as he began to laugh his voice distorting, and twisting in front of the Inquisitor. The air around the cabin grew cold, but an emotion seemingly filled the whole cabin to the point of palpable. "I am coming for the whore." , the elder's voice no longer sounding full of fear and much more youthful than before was punctuated by his arm shooting forward and his hand grasping around the neck of the Inquisitor. Fear.

The Inquisitor felt fear, it filled him as if he were nothing more than a wild animal in the forest being stalked, being judged from afar for the moment his hunter decided to strike. That is what the feeling had been. The elderly Sueki's body snapped and morphed as muscles, ligaments, and bones all changed shape to give way to new form, all the while the Inquisitor struggled to release himself from the grasp of the man in front of him. The candle blew out as a harsh breeze blew through the open window of the cabin, but the Inquisitor found himself illuminated by a set of glowing red eyes. Eyes that pierced him to the very center of his being. "I had no idea the 'Queen' was so interested in hearing of the First...but it amuses me that she would send one...just one to investigate. An army would have been more fitting. She herself stepping away from her pretty golden throne inside of her whore house of a palace would have been more of an exercise. This is nothing more than a snack...no even less than that, this is a slight of the ultimate kind, before she was even a single celled organism I existed, to be wronged in such a manner? Insulting.", the voice was filled with venom, the breath of the owner of the glowing red eyes burning the skin of the Inquisitor as he dragged him toward him.

The predator's, the only word that the Inquisitor could come up with in his head which was jumbled mess at this point, face became visible with pale skin, and a mouth full of impossibly sharp teeth. "Though a man of my age can't be picky...he can't hesitate but to dig in and enjoy even the scraps from the table.", the words were filled with so much hatred, but the broad grin revealing more and more teeth illuminated by the red glow of the predator's eyes caused the Inquisitor to do something he hadn't done to himself since he had been a child. He soiled himself. Much like he had been when his life first started, he became again in the end. He babbled incoherently as Takuya sank his fangs into the Inquisitor pulling chunks of meat, bone, and gallons of blood out with every bite. The screams filled the night and blood pooled underneath the cabin's door. Then silence, a lone figure emerging from the cabin as it slowly burned down to the choir of the cackling flame, and the sound of owls hooting in the nearby forest. The lone figure marched away, still heading West, still marching to meet the 'Queen'. Takuya Lao could not wait.
