I. Personality
» Personality:
On the surface, Mirajane is often perceived as being quite bubbly. Little seems to get at her or disrupt her mood as her upbeat and joyous personality stay strong against tidal waves of negativity and darkness. Always the person in a group to keep the morale up and mood positive, Mira is often looked at as useful to have around just from this fact around. Another aspect of her vivacious attitude is the ability to deliver news of all kinds without missing a beat. Whether the news is good or bad is largely irrelevant which usually leads to rather peculiar, though often comedic, scenarios. For example, if Mirajane found herself and allies in a combat situation in which the odds are heavily stacked against them, there's a fair chance her analysis of the situation, likely consisting of an exclamation they're all going to die, would be delivered with a bright and wide smile on her face and pep in her voice. Such a positive-voiced evaluation would possibly cause as much distress as the content of her words itself.
In terms of working towards goals, Mirajane is near-peerless. Her ability to focus on an objective and putting forth effort to achieve it is boundless thanks to the unique worldview bestowed upon her by her father. What this boils down to is an individual who is particularly adept at staying on objective with an unusually high success rate because of it. As a warrior this particular trait is, for obvious reasons, rather useful as it makes Mira nigh-impervious to distractions in life or death situations. However, it is useful in other ways as well; one example being the ability to focus more heavily during training to the point of learning techniques and combat styles incredibly quickly, while also mastering them far faster than many of her peers as well. Given her proclivity for skill-based combat, this aspect of her personality has been quite important for her development as a fighter and was hammered into her persona by her teacher.
In general the most important part of Mirajane's training under her father was the idea of total detachment from all worldly things, including objects, such as belongings, and people. Such a thing was not easy in the least bit to come to grips with, yet Mira eventually did and no longer holds attachments to the physical world. What this means in terms of personality is both simple overall but can be far more complex when it comes to specifics and unique interactions. Generally speaking, a lack of attachments means Mira does not worry about possessing belongings or damage to what she already owns. Though this is pretty normal for most Shinigami who live and die as soldiers dedicated to a cause, for Mira it is far more extreme due to the fact it also causes her to be entirely uncaring about her personal relationships and connections. While she is able to form bonds with others, should said bonds be severed Mira would have no qualms about it and move on easily. In battle this does mean should a friend or ally fall it would not distract or throw her off her game, but also makes Mira seem incredibly callous and unfeeling to witnesses.
Total detachment has multiple positives and negatives. As previously mentioned, Mirajane does not have to ever worry about grieving the way others do which saves her from extreme heartache and emotional struggles. Along with this, she is not obsessed with amassing wealth or hunting down artifacts or advanced technology, and while there are benefits to be had with possession over any of these things, the lack of associated stress and effort allows Mira to concentrate on more important things like her own goals and objectives. Unfortunately, also as previously stated, total objectivity is often mistaken to be unfeeling callousness and as such has consequences with others. Along with this, lack of attachment denotes a level of hollowness to what relationships Mirajane does have as extreme emotions like love and hate are generally moved past immediately and without difficulty.
Despite having a worldview almost all encompassing in how it affects her interactions with others, Mirajane's personality is more complicated than at first glance. On the surface she seems to be positive and bubbly, yet in certain circumstances is capable of being colder than arctic snow. Mira, like anyone else, also has a breaking point and when pushed and pushed and pushed, may reach it. Unlike others though who may explode in rage or anguish, someone like Mirajane who's achieved detachment would not experience a breaking point that way; for her, it would be about the pseudo-faux persona she's built up over the years. Casting away the upbeat and positive facade she's known for, Mira, under great stress, reverts back to her natural cold and uncaring being.
As her most natural state, there is essentially no filter through which her thoughts would usually pass and as such are entirely true to who she is. This can be harmful to her relationships as Mira's true intentions and beliefs are made clear, including her disregard for their demise. In terms of how it may change her in combat, if it could be said Mirajane is usually operating at ninety five percent efficiency, without the facade of her built up persona in the way she is basically at one hundred percent and as such becomes even more fierce a warrior.
Mira is not one to focus on or prioritize being feminine. Like her siblings, gender and sexuality are largely not significant aspects of who she is; still, like Mifune, it is not ignored entirely. While her elder brother married and had a child, Mira is not quite at that point, though a romantic relationship is hardly an impossibility. She is capable of feeling strongly about others even while realizing should anything happen to them she would not be hurt emotionally, a duality Mirajane has not had to struggle with much yet; though if she were to be put in such a situation, it is difficult to guess exactly how (if at all) she would deal with it. Assuming she stuck to her objectivity Mira may just move past it, unaffected personally. However such a result cannot be predicted at this time due to her reaction when she and her only family separated.
I. History
» History:
Unlike most spirits in Soul Society, Mirajane was born as a full fledged Shinigami. This set her far apart from the Pluses around her and immediately made her ostracized to a significant degree, especially with her unique parentage. Her mother, a well known though unpopular Shinigami, and her father an entirely unknown foreigner, caused further alienation amongst her peers in the Rukongai District she was born in. This District, while not entirely savage like it's outermost cousins, was hardly high class society and as such meant poverty was common. The fact both her parents had moderate wealth and never found themselves vulnerable to thieves or other criminals made the family stand out like a sore thumb against the dirty and impoverished background of their District. Having retired from the Gotei Thirteen, Mirajane's mother had few if any connections to the military organization; as such they found themselves in a less-invulnerable position than they had previously.
At some point while Mirajane was an infant, according to her father, their modest home was lit ablaze in the dark of night while they slept; in the resulting chaos and confusion he grabbed Mira and left the collapsing structure as quick as he dared, tragically leaving behind her mother to a bitter fate. In his words their envious neighbors had attempted to murder all three of them merely to obtain a bit of wealth he and his wife had accumulated over the years, an overall petty amount compared to what the denizens of Seireitei casually spent on a daily basis. While he could save Mira there was no possibility of saving her mother as well, leaving naught left to do but escape to somewhere safe. Thus they absconded to the unpopulated wildlands beyond the outermost Rukongai Districts, an area where only nature would be their enemy. Thus she would be raised amongst the ferns and trees in lieu of buildings and roads, a solitary life to say the least.
From her first memory of her father Mirajane knew he was tough and weathered, powerful in both aura and personality. Like looking up to a Titan, she regularly found herself incredibly intimidated by the man who ensured her survival on a daily basis despite no true maliciousness directed towards her. This was further solidified by his seemingly lack of fear, whether it be of the unknown or of monstrous beasts attempting to prey upon the duo. Any time they found themselves imperiled all danger was immediately cut down in a single swing of his sword, clearing away their enemies and obstacles like Moses parting the Red Sea. There were none who could threaten Mira, a fact which her father made sure to be true. For this she also greatly admired and respected him and his power, wanting to obtain the strength he protected them with.
When it became clear Mirajane sought to become strong like her father, he brought her out to a particularly difficult patch of jungle and provided her with three weapons: A spear, a sword, and a bow with twenty handcrafted arrows in a quiver...and left her. At the age of eight Mirajane was abandoned to survive the wilderness she had only managed to live in thanks to her father. By the third day she found herself covered in scrapes and bruises, barely pushing on due to the belief her father was coming back for her. With bow in hand she managed to hunt for food, though some days she went without and began resenting her situation. Yet something inside her encouraged her to keep on surviving and fighting no matter what problems arose. By the fifth week many of her arrows had snapped and broken, leaving her with a spear and sword as her remaining tools for survival. The spear was incredibly useful, able to be thrown as a projectile to kill birds and rodents, and operated fantastically as a method of self defense against the jaguar and snake-like creatures Mira regularly ran across in the jungle.
After about four months living on her own as a child in one of Soul Society's wildland jungles, Mirajane had begun to find her footing and figured out exactly how to live off the land. Her spear was weakened from use as thin cracks had begun forming on it's shaft. In a particularly rough situation in which a feral beast chased her through the jungle, vines and thorn-covered plants striking her from every direction in the process, Mira sprinted through the trees with incredible agility, as if she herself was a wild cat at home among the unfriendly environment. The chase led to her inadvertently launching herself from a cliff, off of which she fell until crashing into a raging whitewater river flowing downhill below, during which Mira's spear smashed upon a boulder and split into pieces. It wasn't until Mirajane dragged herself out of the water almost a mile down river that she realized the only tool still remaining in her possession was the short sword still tied at her waist, resting gently against her left hip. The one weapon Mira had refrained from using out of fear of it's limited use. Yet now she found herself forced to use the blade as her last resort.
Another year and six months passed until one night when Mirajane, now a ten year old Shinigami living in Soul Society's most brutal environment, awoke with a start; the dull glow of her fire's charred embers painting the scene in a low orange light. Everything was quiet with nary a stir from beyond the tiny clearing Mira had made camp in; yet something was not quite right. Even against a pitch black background Mira's brutally honed senses detected something was off. Her suspicions were confirmed as a twig just a few feet behind her snapped. In an instant the Shinigami had drawn her worn sword, spun in place, and prepared to cut down whatever it was that dared interrupt her sleep. To the man who stepped forth from the shadows the girl before him was like a stranger, entirely unrecognizable from the daughter he had left behind almost two years prior. In lieu of proper dressing and hygiene was matted mud-covered hair grown long over time, a short dress made of poorly stitched together skins from various animals, and a wild look on her face like a cornered tiger ready to pounce. The first words from his mouth, which were like golden notes from the most beautiful instrument Mira could imagine, were simply "You truly are a Soan."
The majesty of the man's words were, in retrospect, only special because they were the first Mirajane had heard in almost two years. Though at first uneasy about him, after sizing the man up and down Mira dropped her sword and fell to her knees: At long last had her father returned. Regardless of his reasons for leaving her alone in that terribly barbaric and lonely place, Mira was just happy to see another person again. Standing tall and mighty like a Spartan warrior, her memories of him quickly flooded to the surface and once again Mirajane found herself enraptured by the man. At his side they left the jungle once and for all and returned to the small cabin he had built on it's outskirts, after which he allowed her time to clean up and change into less filthy clothes. He even cut her hair so that it was just long enough to pass her shoulders, and was put up in a pony tail at the back of her skull. From this day forth, he announced to Mira, he would train Mira in the way of the sword. Though such a thing had been at the back of her mind throughout this sweet evening in which she shed her identity as a wild creature, something was awakened deep inside Mira's soul. Like all members of her bloodline there was just something...instinctual about wanting to wield a sword. Her hands shook at the prospect of learning swordsmanship from a person she'd witnessed cut down all their enemies one after another.
After allowing a mere three days of recovery for Mirajane, her father quickly set about to training her in the way of the blade. At first she struggled to learn the basics due to how animalistic and bestial her fighting style had developed to be while surviving in the jungle, but she quickly found herself being able to separate what she knew from what she was meant to learn. Though hardly the most ingenious pupil a teacher could ask for, Mira's desire to improve and natural Soan obsession with mastering the sword made it clear her potential was there. It took but a year for her to become so adept Mirajane's father felt it necessary to advance her training to real world combat scenarios. Over the course of several years after, the two went on regular treks to the Wastelands on Earth where Mira was forced to take on monstrous Hollows and Demons in a fight for survival; something she was already quite familiar with. Unlike before though she was no longer dealing with wild creatures simply fighting for food. Now Mirajane found her enemies mighty and capable, with human-like intelligence to boot. This brutal "training", if it could even be called this, regularly left her bleeding out and barely breathing. Despite this she insisted on continuing after short periods of recovery.
Years went by like this as Mirajane continued her tutelage under her father who, unbeknownst to her, was one of the mightiest swordsmen in the world who's other children were considered the best of the best. But to her he was just her father, a hard, stoic man who always appeared unbeatable. In all their spars she made no headway against him, always ending the bouts flat on her ass or face depending on how he chose to defeat her at the given moment. Still, every night Mira went to bed confident she learned something new that day. This went on seemingly forever, at least for another decade, until suddenly something changed in her father. He seemed evermore restless and distant, continually distracted from their training (despite this he still bested her every time their blades met). On Mirajane's twenty first birthday her father announced he would be leaving again and that she would venture to Seireitei's Shino Academy where she would receive formal Shinigami training. Despite initially protesting separating again, it was clear he would have none of it and that his plan for her was already set in stone. And thus, just as he had before, Mira's father left her in a wild and foreign land; this time the clean and regal streets of Soul Society's capital city.
In days Mira was accepted into the Shino Academy, acing the entrance exam's combat and survival sections to such an extreme degree she gained a reputation as a genius among her peers, many of whom were three or four times her age. Yet this reputation would quickly shatter as she continuously struggled in every course besides Zanjutsu, in which she quickly figured out even her best peers could not hope to compare to her own abilities. Despite her incredible skill in swordsmanship, developed over years of life or death training and battle, Mirajane's other courses were significant obstacles for her. While the majority of her initial classmates graduated on time six years after entering the Academy, Mira found herself still struggling to grasp the basics of everything but Zanjutsu eight years in. Fortunately for her continued war with outside forces, including the Demon Incursion which resulted in many new graduates perishing in battle as fresh Gotei soldiers, Mira was pushed through to graduation so that she too could join Soul Society's military. Unsure of exactly how to proceed, having only been given a few specific but still far away objectives by her father, Mirajane now finds herself with no friends, no connections, and no abilities in the Gotei United in the middle of a World War.

» General/Racial Abilities:
Potential: Mirajane has been stated to have incredible latent ability. According to her father she has the most potential out of any Soan ever born, including himself and his eldest sons; however, in the same vein she has also been called the weakest Soan ever born. Just like with her personality, this duality has thus far not caused many issues for her but is an issue waiting on the horizon. Unlike a stereotypical prodigy who seems immediately capable and skilled, able to pick up on practically anything on the first or second try, Mira's potential is much more akin to all that skill and power being contained by a dam. While small cracks may appear, allowing minuscule, though promising, amounts through, the vast bulk of it remains inaccessible for now.
Interestingly this also functions as a limiter of her regular power in combat situations. How this functions is at the start of combat in a thread, regardless of whether it's 1 or 10 pages in, Mira has access to only 65% of her normal strength which applies to her energy levels, unique abilities, and skills. After the first 6 posting rounds this is bumped up to 95% of her normal capabilities, right about where her usual self is though still with a bit of a disadvantage. After another three posting rounds her latent power is finally brought to the surface as the limiting 'dam' is weakened, bringing her up to 125% efficiency in all regards. Though a strain on her body, even in prolonged combat it doesn't really affect her too much. However the required buildup oftentimes leaves her in such poor shape the extra power is rarely able to make up for it, a significant reason why her father believes her to be the weakest Soan.
Speed: In terms of physical traits this is no doubt her greatest attribute. Having such a lithe body certainly contributes to her prioritization of speed. Arguably the most useful aspect of her speed is agility, with which she is capable of dodging point blank attacks if given the opportunity and not drastically out-sped by her opponent. Along with this is the ability to dance around her enemies and strike with her blade swiftly and from angles other may find awkward, providing a way to deal with significantly stronger foes Mira would likely stand no chance against head on. During her training Mira was forced to learn to utilize her environment to her advantage, which is especially important in urban and suburban areas where flitting about between structures and obstacles provides both ample defense and avenues from which she can land devious surprise attacks.
Swordsmanship: Trained from a young age by her father, Mirajane stands out in a single regard: Swordsmanship. Her skill with the blade is breathtaking, having long since mastered the basics and advanced aspects of multiple martial arts. Like all Soan's Mira has a unique instinctual interest in sword-based martial arts; this, combined with her undying dedication to her father's training, meant basically from the first time she could remember Mirajane sought to hone her skill to an indescribable degree. While certainly far from perfection, throughout her tenure at the Shino Academy there was not a single other student Shinigami who could be considered her peer in Zanjutsu or sword skill in general. This helped make up for her total lack of interest in the other aspects of Shinigami combat in the eyes of the Academy's staff.
During her training with her father Mirajane would seemingly grow inhumanly skillful in a single day's time, evolving from but an adept to a master in the span of twenty four hours; yet at the start of the next day, she would nearly be back to where she had started. At first this was a point of frustration for the elder swordsman, yet it became clear what this phenomenon was: Her skill and power are essentially like a hair tie: Though at first when you stretch it out it quickly returns to it's original size and shape, through repeated stretching it could grow and be able to be stretched further, not entirely unlike a muscle, until eventually snapping. Mira's father theorized if she ever reached the point of snapping either all of her skill and power would fade away, or limitless ability would be at her disposal. Neither was ever proven true during his time training her, but to him this merely means she has an incredible amount of growing still to do even in terms of sword skill even after all the knowledge and capability she's already managed to accrue.
Perhaps the most important aspects of her training were the instinctual and raw skill developed during her time living alone in the jungle and while fighting Hollows and Demons on Earth, and the precise and formal swordsmanship teachings of her father. Combined they make Mirajane a blade wielder capable of dealing with practically any and all situations she finds herself in. Whether she is up against a monstrous enemy or a skilled human-like opponent Mirajane has experience enough with both to find her way through battle. This twofold training honed her skill and instincts to such a degree few in the Gotei can match, especially among her low ranked peers who are either fresh out of the Academy or possessing limited real combat experience. Even those with experience would struggle to name teachers as skilled as Mirajane's, the man responsible for the Soan lineage. As such her skill with the blade is to such a degree that it overshadows every other aspect of her combat ability monumentally.
- Mizūnagare no Gyakuten-ha (水の流れの逆転の刃; Blade of the Reversal of the Flow of Water): By focusing on the use of her speed and agility, Mirajane's particular fighting style is especially effective at fighting those noticeably stronger than herself. How this works is essentially an emphasis on parrying over direct attacks and dancing around the opponent until an opening makes itself clear. By striking the end of an attacker's blade, weapon, or attack with her own Mira is able to parry and turn their own momentum against them, drastically increasing the power of her own attack due to being able to more reliably land direct hits in close quarters. The speed of her parry is what's important here as simple high-power attacks can have their force rendered virtually inert by not giving time for the attacker to react or divert their movements. Mizūnagare no Gyakuten-ha is also rather effective against larger opponents too due to Mirajane being able to dodge around and avoid their attacks while landing her own weaker strikes which act essentially as chip damage, adding up over time until finally bringing down whatever beast she's fighting.

The only real issue is her swordsmanship, given her age of being only only the cusp of thirty it'd be prefer that the comments about her basically being unmatched within the Academy, when you have instructors with many hundreds of years experience as the teachers and not to mention the possible specialist it's pretty ridiculous for her to be able to be unmatched and not even be beaten once in her eight year stay. As a result just tone it down in her history and swordsmanship skill and it'll all be good.Approved at 5-3 with exceptions for Advanced Weapon Skill and Untrained Hoho, Hakuda and Kido.
