The waiting room at the medical division barracks was by most standards a little lacking; Shio couldn't find any reading material, even subpar quality magazines that had been handled by hundreds or thousands of hands before him. He settled for closing his eyes and humming a tune softly to himself, counting his breaths, doing his best to let them in and out in six-second bursts. It took a small portion of his focus, barely enough to combat the anxiety, but it was enough to prevent him from getting up and pacing, or pulling at threads of clothing, or some other form of nervous habit.

It was his first 'mandatory therapy' session, and he already had a few very strong notions as to what was about to come. It wouldn't even surprise him to hear a member of the stealth division would be in attendance to ensure he couldn't lie or refuse to answer a question without suffering some manner of consequence. Midori had been understanding enough in their first visit, but that counted for little when she was in an organization like the Gotei; there were too many other fingers in the pie, too many other interests being sought here, and the time it would take to make a single nobody shinigami like him start being more open and honest? Shio couldn't imagine any captain seeing it as a meaningful investment of their energy, even one as pleasant as Midori.

You are far from any normal shinigami, Shio. Do you not recall, sweetling, how it felt once upon a time? To be the one everyone spoke of? To be the man everyone found interesting? So many nice words. Prodigy. Gifted. Brilliant. There doesn't exist in this world a nobody. Every person is as different as a candle made in part of the same batch. Though much of it may seem the same...you can always tell by looking deeply. This world is filled with fascinating people, and you are one of them.

Shio inhaled a little deeper than he should've this time, somehow struck deeply by the words of his zanpakuto spirit...perhaps because they were spoken by someone who knew him so well, who had stood by his side for such a long time. It was not at all like those who simply judged based on what they saw, and what they suspected. There was something...genuine, something intimate, about that familiarity. Something that soothed him, even now. It's entirely possible, had she not spoken out, Shio would've simply bit the bullet and left.

God, he hoped his name was called soon. He wasn't sure how long he could sit here, trying to breathe without losing his composure.

Midori Hayashi

Captain of the Second Division

It was in the afternoon when Shio Mora's appointment was going to come up. Midori had prepared for this in one way, by making sure she went to lunch first. She was going to need energy to deal with this one, especially if his behavior hadn't changed since the last time they talked. Hopefully, however, he had time to think and decided to give their sessions a chance.

It is because of this that Midori didn't come from the usual hallway to call Shio. She instead came from the back entrance and walked into the waiting room from the opposite direction. Seeing Shio sitting there, she waved, smiled, and motioned for him to follow. "Good afternoon, Shio. How have you been since our last talk?" she asked as they walked down the hallway and into her office. She closed the door behind him like usual and then sat behind her desk, allowing him to choose wherever he wanted to sit. There was a nice comfortable chair or a long leather bed that he could lay on.

"So, this is the first of our sessions. As you know, I did not pull you from duty. I do not want to interrupt your normal life. I am also very glad you decided to talk to me and I am hoping I can help you feel more calm as time goes on. I do ask that you keep an open mind and try to open up to me as well." With that, she watched him for a moment to gauge his mood. She wanted to know what she'd be dealing with this time and had to figure out a way to make him feel at ease. There was no reason for him to be tense, but how to show him that? Telling wouldn't work. He had to see it, to feel it. "So, anything new?"

And of course, Midori came from a direction Shio hadn't prepared for. He glanced up towards her, his expression one of warmth and delight, but it was still easy to see the doubt and concern in his gaze. He was already scoping out the room and the ways out, even as he rose to shake her hand, and follow after her towards her quarters. He walked along behind her, hands resting in the fabric of his outfit, all the better to hide the intensity with which he clenched his fist, and the degree of turmoil he was trying to face. He wanted to start babbling about a dozen different topics, and he wanted to run, and he wanted to freeze up entirely and simply wait for her to lose interest, all at once...but he knew none of these options would make a difference.

He entered her office, standing near the wall and examining her in silence for a few moments. He clearly seemed to be trying to figure out the right words, or the right way to put them. He continued to take in the room, allowing one shoulder to rise ever so faintly in a shrug as he circled the room, as if taking it all in. He did want to get his life back on track, that was certain...but to imagine that opening up to Midori like this was the first step, that was a matter he still couldn't quite sell himself on. It was hard to imagine her actually taking an active interest in his everyday life.

"Nothing you'd consider significant, Captain Midori. I had a relaxing day off recently, but that's nothing out of the ordinary. I actually find the human world more comforting than the Soul Society most of the time. Why don't we talk about the Rukongai, instead? Do you visit the districts often, Captain? I'd imagine it's a fairly regular part of the medical division's duties."

There was something canny behind his gaze now, some part of his gaze that implied the answer was far more important than his lackidaiscal smile and his relaxed posture implied. It almost felt like he was laying some sort of bait for her, or waiting in the hopes that she would answer the question properly.

Midori Hayashi

Captain of the Second Division

She had been dreading this meeting, but the change in his demeanor was a welcome one. Something must have happened since their last meeting. He was evasive like she expected and turned the conversation toward her. She was in a much better mood on this day than she had been in a while, so even she felt a bit more open. She leaned back in her office chair and motioned for him to sit down somewhere. "I don't visit the Rukongai unless I'm needed. Most of the time, I'm not. We have quite a few skilled healers in my Division that do well on their own when visiting patients in the Rukon. I probably should visit it more, honestly. I don't know why I don't when that is where I started out..." Midori rolled that thought around in her head a bit.

"Why are you interested in the Rukongai, Shio? You said you find the World of the Living more relaxing, so I would assume that subject would be more appealing." she asked with a sincere curiosity, eyeing him closely. She knew something was going on in his head, but what was it? Last time they talked, she beat around the bush a lot. She tried getting him to open up on his own, but he wasn't one of those patients. His trust issues prevented that.
